Metro Checks In to Le Berbère Palace, a 5-star hotel in Ouarzazate, Morocco.

Driving past Ouarzazate’s sunbaked buildings, an imposing fortress catches my eye. It looks like something out of a film – fitting, really, for a place that has welcomed some of the world’s greatest actors.

The building is a short drive from Atlas Studios, where many famous films, including Gladiator, Astérix & Obélix and Prince of Persia, were set. The crews, directors and actors often spend long periods of time here during production.

But Le Berbère Palace plays a starring role of its own.

In just three decades, this hotel has become a local legend – the first luxury stay of its kind in southern Morocco.

What’s the vibe? Paint us a picture

Inside, Hollywood glamour meets Berber warmth, with opulent furnishings, intricate mosaics and a fountain that trickles a calming soundtrack.

After checking in, I am invited to sit down for some mint tea and sweet treats.

The atmosphere is relaxed yet elegant (‘very old money’, I hear someone nearby whisper), and unmistakably Moroccan.

Film props are dotted around every room, some more subtly than others, a nod to the hotel’s Hollywood connections.

To reach my room, I need to cross the gardens, following paths lined with orange and lemon trees. As we walk through a shaded courtyard, the porter tells me that Anthony Hopkins loved spending time here and playing with the resident kittens while filming Mary (2024).

What are the rooms like?

The 249 rooms are understated but luxurious. Clean lines keep things modern without losing the Berber touch, with soft beige tones, warm accent pillows, and handwoven rugs.

My Deluxe room was spacious, with both a shower and a bathtub. The extra-large double bed was comfortable, and I appreciated the effective blackout curtains.

The room came equipped with all the usual amenities, but some details – such as the phone and the leather folders with the documents – could have benefited from a refresh.

I was impressed with the small gestures, from the tray of sweets at arrival to the hair conditioner in the bathroom after I requested an extra bottle.

What about the facilities?

Black soap cleansing, kessa glove exfoliation, rhassoul clay wrap, and argan oil massages…

A selection of traditional treatments is on offer at the hotel’s hammam. The sauna and hot tub are functional yet charming.

The gym is well-equipped, and I can’t resist giving my best on the machines supposedly left behind by Denzel Washington after filming Gladiator 2.

But the highlight for me was the pool. Leafy and spacious, it felt like the perfect set for the next season of White Lotus or The Night Manager, though it can get crowded at peak times.

There is also an exit informally known as ‘the Brad Pitt door’, allegedly from when he was dating Angelina Jolie.

Can you eat and drink at Le Berbère Palace?

The main restaurant serves a mix of Moroccan and international dishes, with a generous buffet that leans heavily on fresh salads, pastas and the sort of slow-cooked tagines you hope for when staying in this part of Morocco.

There’s also an Italian restaurant, La Trattoria, and a lounge bar for pre-dinner drinks or nightcaps, with a short but solid list of wines, cocktails and coffee.

Breakfast was excellent: a sprawling selection of pastries, breads, fruit and cold cuts, anchored by an egg station. I loved starting my day with a fresh omelette or msemen, Moroccan square-shaped flatbreads.
