With the presence of more than 30 people with disabilities, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) held its first public hearing with the objective of addressing the invalidity of general regulations due to lack of consultation with said sector.

With in-person and remote participation of people with disabilities, the Public Hearing was framed in the discussion of Unconstitutionality Action 182/2024, led by Minister Lenia Batres Guadarrama.
In this matter, the State Commission on Human Rights of Michoacán requested the invalidity of various articles of the Law of the State Commission on Human Rights of Michoacán, as people with disabilities had not been consulted.

During this first day, more than 30 people with disabilities (including psychosocial ones), their representatives and civil society organizations shared, in person or remotely, their experiences, concerns such as “ableist and exclusionary discourses”, and their proposals. There were participations from various states of the country, including Michoacán, Morelos, Hidalgo, Baja California, Nayarit, Tabasco and San Luis Potosí.
Activist Miguel Ángel Miranda said by video call that there are colleagues who cannot leave their homes, who do not have internet or it is difficult to walk, go out and use public transportation. For his part, Ángel Ibarra, from his office, sent greetings from Michoacán. “People with disabilities have difficulty approaching public institutions because we have lived with that fear of being discriminated against,” he said.
The Public Hearing had universal accessibility measures, such as interpretation in Mexican Sign Language, real-time subtitling and reasonable adjustments, which guaranteed the full and inclusive participation of all interested parties.
In compliance with the list approved by the Plenary of the SCJN, the ministers will continue listening to people with disabilities, tomorrow, Tuesday, October 21 and Wednesday, October 22.
