Rising city prices, packed suburbs, and the craving for more space are pushing many big city families and property buyers to look beyond traditional property hotspots.
Increasingly, they’re setting their sights on a quieter corner of KwaZulu-Natal, where large homes and sweeping views come at a fraction of urban prices.
Here, freestanding properties on generous 2 000 to 4 000sqm stands sell between R1.5 million and R4 million. It’s the kind of value rarely seen in major metros, and it’s sparking strong demand from both young families and retirees.
Property buyers set sights on scenic Underberg
The location? Underberg and its neighbour Himeville, tucked into the foothills of the scenic Southern Drakensberg.
Known for its snowy winter landscapes, trout fishing, hiking trails, as well as easy access to the famous Sani Pass, the region offers a mix of tranquillity and adventure.
“Consider the fact that you can purchase a four-bedroom, 246sqm sectional title unit with spectacular mountain views for R1.495 million,” Angela Walker, Underberg area principal for Pam Golding Properties, revealed.
“It’s no surprise young families are choosing to settle here.” Walker also said.
Buyers relocating from Johannesburg, Durban, and even the Western Cape are finding homes in the R1.5–R2 million bracket, while retirees often spend closer to R3 million.
The appeal of Underberg goes beyond house prices; families are also drawn to excellent local schools, a strong community, and, for many, the chance to work remotely from a more scenic setting.
