‘The Sopranos’ Is Coming to Netflix — And Some Fans Are Confused

Some fans are having a hard time imagining Tony Soprano on the streaming platform that brings you Bridgerton and Squid Game.

Netflix’s big acquisition of Warner Brothers – which includes HBO Max and HBO and, thus, The Sopranos series – has fans of the New Jersey mobster drama heading to social media to react. Some are creating memes and jokes about the transition. Others were confused or concerned. Some were excited.

“Watching Sopranos on Netflix just feels wrong. Maybe even paltry? Doesn’t sit right,” a person wrote on X.

It’s not entirely clear whether HBO Max and HBO would remain stand-alone services bundled with Netflix’s platform, or whether they would merge together in a single app.

The Sopranos, of course, followed two “families” of mobster Tony Soprano – his mob family and his actual family. There is already a page for the Mafia series on the Netflix platform. It doesn’t say when it will be available to stream there, though. Customers get a “remind me” button option.

When will The Sopranos be available on Netflix? “Don’t expect the HBO library to appear on your Netflix homepage tomorrow. These massive mergers take time to navigate regulatory approvals and shareholder votes,” What’s on Netflix advises. “Late 2026 / Early 2027: The Netflix/Warner Bros. transaction is expected to close (12-18 months from today).”

Some ‘Sopranos’ Fans Expressed Confusion About the Acquisition

“Today, Netflix, Inc. (the Company) and Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (WBD) announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO,” the company announced in a press release on December 6.

“Beloved franchises, shows and movies such as The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Wizard of Oz and the DC Universe will join Netflix’s extensive portfolio including Wednesday, Money Heist, Bridgerton, Adolescence and Extraction, creating an extraordinary entertainment offering for audiences worldwide,” Netflix wrote.

“Hearing the words ‘the Sopranos’ and “Game of Thrones” in the same sentence as Squid Game, Bridgerton and Wednesday,a fan wrote on X.

Other fans also seemed puzzled.

However, other fans were excited by the acquisition. “Sopranos coming to Netflix is the best thing that’s happened to everyone. I’m serious this will cure humanity,” wrote a fan.

Some fans of HBO’s offerings don’t think Netflix is a good fit. “And HBO is officially dead. The company that produced The Sopranos, Band of Brothers, The Wire, Chernobyl and so much more is going to die because of how bad Netflix makes their stuff,” wrote one person.

Fans imagined The Sopranos remade with Netflix’s ethics.

Some fans don’t believe a Sopranos would get made by Netflix today, and that’s what is driving their concern. “Netflix prides itself on ‘gourmet cheeseburgers’ while every truly great show of the last 25 years was something far from an expensive version of fast food. Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men, GOT, Twin Peaks: The Return, (the list goes on) were all considered risky and niche,” wrote one.

But another observer was excited to see how the deal would transform Netflix. “This will turn out to be one of the best acquisitions in history and sets up @netflix to be the Disney of this century,” he wrote.
