Yesterday, Tuesday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted two resolutions to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the Syrian Golan Heights.
The draft resolution on Palestine was put forward by Djibouti, Jordan, Mauritania, Qatar, Senegal and Palestine.
151 countries voted in favor of the draft resolution, while 11 countries opposed it, led by Israel and the United States, and 11 countries abstained from voting.
The adopted resolution reaffirms the responsibility of the United Nations towards the Palestinian issue, and calls for an end to the Israeli occupation of the territories occupied after 1967, in addition to supporting the two-state solution.
The General Assembly also adopted another resolution proposed by Egypt calling on Israel to withdraw from the Syrian Golan Heights, considering its occupation and annexation of the region an “illegal act.”
123 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while 7 countries opposed it, led by Israel and the United States, while 41 countries abstained from voting.
The adopted resolution states that Israel’s occupation and effective annexation of the Golan Heights is an illegal act and contravenes Security Council Resolution No. 497 of 1981.
In its first comment on the resolution, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it “demands Israel to withdraw from the entire occupied Syrian Golan, and considered that the increase in the number of countries that voted in favor of the resolution shows the extent of support for the new Syria and its adherence to the occupied Golan.”
