“Until Mexico stops the games and fulfills its commitments, we will continue to hold them responsible,” the North American warned. The US official added that “no country should take advantage of our airlines, our market and our travelers without repercussions.”
‘Sustained non-compliance’
The Department of Transportation of the American Union (DOTfor its acronym in English) justified the decision by alleging a “sustained non-compliance” from Mexico with the signed bilateral agreement.
According to Duffy, the Mexican government would have unilaterally restricted the slots of US airlines and forced cargo companies in his country to relocate their operations from 2022. To Rosario Avilesaviation analyst, this is a very harsh reaction… “it is the next step of the sanctions that were already expected to come.” Fernando Gomez Suarezan expert in the sector, added that these measures had already been warned by the Trump administration for failing to comply with the bilateral air agreement.
“The predictions came true and now the cancellation of 13 routes will undoubtedly affect the airlines.”
The Trump administration, which has toughened its trade and immigration policy with Mexico, frames the measure within a broader strategy to “protect the interests of American workers and travelers.”
Duffy also accused the previous administration of Joe Biden of “too weak” to enforce the agreement. He DOT He specified that the new ban on flights could be extended to the transportation of cargo between the capital airport and the US terminals, a restriction that could come into force between three and five months, by January or March 2026.

The bilateral agreement was breached
The US Department of Transportation argued, when the air category was lostthat our country did not comply with the bilateral aviation agreement signed in 2022a year in which it cut the slots of US passenger airlines and forced exclusive cargo companies in the United States to relocate their operations to the AIFA.
According to the airline regulatory agency, this non-compliance “could affect the travel plans of US citizens.
“Passengers should contact their airline for specific information on relocation,” the agency warned. There are 13 air routes that Mexico and the US operated that were banned in retaliation.
