The US broke relations with Canada because they used a Ronald Reagan commercial

Like a slap from beyond

Time Capsule.- The United States Government broke trade relations with Canada after the neighboring country used an old Ronald Reagan speech to mock Donald Trump.

After months of tensions between both countries, the Trump administration decided to cut ties with its northern partner after the Ontario government used fragments of the former Republican president in an advertisement that highlighted the contradictions of the current president in matters of trade (and self-esteem).

The commercial, aired as part of a local campaign, includes a fragment in which Reagan warns about the dangers of imposing tariffs, making former President Trump look bad—no need for Photoshop.

Canadians used Reagan to mock Trump

“Sometimes in the short term it works, but only for a short time. In the long term, these trade barriers hurt all American workers and consumers,” Reagan says in the spot, as if he could already smell the economic disaster that would come decades later.

“Markets contract and collapse. Companies and industries close and millions of people lose their jobs,” he adds, probably not imagining that his own party would use those words for memes 40 years later.

Furious, Trump declared that the video was “direct interference in US domestic politics” and announced the end of all trade negotiations with Canada, in addition to a temporary ban on imports of maple syrup and hockey sticks.
