The US maintains that its withdrawal in Europe does not imply “less commitment” and praises the “greater responsibility” of the Allies

Allied sources emphasize that “President Donald Trump and his administration have reiterated on numerous occasions their commitment to NATO,” and specified that the organization was informed “in advance” of the US plans.

According to these same sources, the recent “Adjustments in the posture of US forces are not unusual” and they recalled that “even with this adjustment, the United States military presence in Europe continues to be one of the largest in recent years, with more troops than before 2022,” when the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began.

The Pentagon has confirmed the reduction of US troops in Europe, but has stressed that This is not a withdrawal or a lesser commitment to NATO or its Article 5which guarantees collective defense. According to Washington, this adjustment represents “a positive sign” of the increase in the “capacity and responsibility” assumed by the European allies.

“NATO has solid defense plans and continues to work to maintain forces and capabilities adequate that guarantee deterrence and collective defense,” the Alliance added.

The US Army Europe and Africa Command specified that, within the framework of the current process to achieve a “balanced” deployment, an infantry brigade will return to its base in Kentucky without an immediate replacementalthough it did not offer details on the number of troops affected.

Early this morning, the Government of Romania notified its allied partners of the departure of part of the North American contingent, although it noted that about a thousand soldiers will remain in the country.

A NATO spokesperson, consulted by Europa Press, acknowledged the readjustment of US troops on the continent and noted that contacts with Washington are “constant” to guarantee that the Alliance maintains a “robust” deterrence and defense capacity, without offering specific figures or detailing which countries will be affected.

At the organization’s headquarters they insist that The United States’ commitment to NATO “is unequivocal” and this is emphasized by President Trump and his Administration in every public intervention.

Since the beginning of the year, Washington has been encouraging European countries to take a more active role in their own defense, given the need for the US to concentrate resources in other strategic scenarios, such as the Indo-Pacific.
