PROGRESS.— In order to guarantee the octopus quality that the fishing sector exports and generate greater confidence among buyers in the international market, there is a process to seek international certification to this end, which would give an important boost to this product that is highly valued in the world.
According to the president of the Canainpesca and Exportamar, Enrique Sánchez Sánchezthe fishing sector in this region of the country seeks certification through the Fishery Improvement Project (FIP)which is a continuous fishing improvement project.
“If it happens, that will represent good news for the yucatecan octopussince it will have a different value due to the sustainability that will be given to this species.”
To obtain said certification, he mentioned, a series of studies must be carried out by a verifier, which must focus only on the Mayan octopus.
An identification process is being carried out, since in the Peninsula There are six species of octopus.
Based on the above, it is necessary to identify the American and Mayan octopusto work only with the latter. He added that precisely these two are the most abundant on our coasts.
He then assured that this will help, internationally, customers to have confidence that they are purchasing a quality product.
The certification is still in progress; carry an advance of 30% or 40%so it would not be ready for this year, but perhaps the next.

In the case of the octopus, this would be the first time that certification has been obtained.
Regarding the current octopus season, he mentioned that, according to the latest data captured last week, there is already a total of 18 thousand tonswhich represents 63% of the expected production for this seasonwhich if all goes well, should conclude during the first half of December.
The octopus industry employs a large number of people.
It is estimated that This activity supports more than 16,000 people directly in Yucatánbetween fishermen and administrative or processing personnel, being a way of life rooted in the traditions of the communities.
The value chain generates income from artisanal capture (using methods such as jimba), to processing, packaging and marketing, injecting constant capital into the economy of ports such as Progreso, Sisal, Celestún, among others.
