The development of technologies linked to Artificial Intelligence (AI) may not be used to the best advantage if companies do not invest in Research and Development (R&D) in the matter. The alert comes from NOS’ AI director, Pedro Brandão.
In statements made to Diário de Notícias, he explains that “there is a risk of technological capabilities becoming relatively inconsequential”. To prevent this from happening, NOS is investing in the sector.
Depending on developments in recent years, particularly with the generative capacity of AI, the telecommunications operator created “a transversal AI program”. The objective is to “maximize the impact we can have with this technology”, he highlights.
The aim is to improve the consumer experience and optimize the company’s internal processes.
The ongoing programs have made it possible to create chatbots “with responsive capacity” for contacts with customers, as well as working within the scope of machine learning (use of concrete data to improve the algorithms used, using minimal human intervention), in order to improve the offers available to customers.
Another program aims to increase the productivity of workers and departments and, in this context, NOS trained “all employees” in generative tools, associated with AI.
According to Pedro Brandão, Generative Artificial Intelligence “is capable of elevating the work of all people”. Therefore, “we have to create conditions for people to use them in a safe way”, he emphasizes.
Warning about future laws launched by Brussels
In the responsible’s assessment, the legislation issued by the EU to regulate AI (the so-called AI Act) does not constitute a barrier to innovation in companies.
Still, looking to the future, he emphasizes the importance of future laws not creating “tension between innovation and regulation”, something that is “the antithesis of what should happen”, he reiterates.
