Agreement is signed by leading corn producers
The agreement reached this morning, on October 29 around 02:00 in the morning, was announced by the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Government of Mexico (Sader), Julio Berdegué, who reported that a consensus was reached with local leaders of corn producers in the states of Jalisco, Guanajuato and Michoacán.
The underlying issue driving this situation is the increase in the availability of corn in the world; This large volume puts downward pressure on world prices, including those in Mexico.
“So far this year there has been a drop in the international price of around 21% in pesos,”
the secretary stressed.
Important agreements were reached, signed in a minute by the vast majority of representatives:
- State and federal governments: support of 950 pesos per ton of corn will be granted to Bajío producers.

This is a credit and insurance program that offers the following:
- Credit to small and medium producers.
- Interest rate of 8.5% per year.

- Establish reference prices prior to planting.
- Promote direct marketing agreements.
- Guarantee clear and known rules, as well as public and official information, within a legal framework.
Among other agreements proposed are:
- The publication of the operational mechanics of the support from the federal government and state governments, without establishing a fixed marketing price.
- The opening of a dialogue table between producers and buyers, promoted by the federal and state governments, with the aim of analyzing marketing conditions and seeking fair prices.
- Give priority to the purchase of the national harvest.
- Allow producer representatives to make observations on the support rules.
