Provide the Yucatecan municipal capitals of ambulances for the medical transfer of patients is a good idea, since the response capacity for emergency care can mark the difference between life and death.
However, the good idea of ambulance availability at the service of city councils has come across the problem of bureaucracy in their administration, especially when it comes to an emergency where every second counts and what is at stake is a life.
In interview with Diary on this topic, Antonio Cardeña Cortés, president of the Association of Justice for Accident Victims, explained that although it is not very deep in the bureaucratic structure of the town councils (each council has its own way of administering them), ambulance services in the event of an emergency must be provided immediately and not subject to a consultation by the councilors to grant it.
“Bureaucracy and emergencies are not compatible“, he explained. “I understand that each city council has its own way of managing the operation of ambulances, so that their use fulfills the mission of supporting the transfer of patients to places where they can receive medical care.”
“What I find difficult to believe is that they intend to condition emergency transfers, where every second counts and can be the difference between life and death, to a consensus of the council.”
The interviewee pointed out that the municipal ambulances They perform a valuable job by facilitating the transfer of patients to health centers in the state capital and, therefore, their use must be properly supervised.
In this sense, emergency transfers should be considered and available to respond immediately.
“It is not possible that in the event of a serious incident where a victim must be transferred immediately, ambulance support arrives an hour and a half after being requested because there was no authorization,” he explained.
Cardeña Cortés added that municipal ambulance transfer services must first be coordinated by the municipal police directorates, backed by the support provided. the SSP or the Red Cross.
“It is about ensuring that victims of an emergency are not left without emergency transportation and that if municipal ambulances are not available, knowing where the closest ones are located to support this situation,” he said..
In his opinion, “it is important that the administration of the ambulances falls to a single person who has the power to grant it when required, otherwise the true meaning of the service that gives rise to them is lost from sight.”
