Merchants offer these electronic devices secretly due to the risk of being arrested by the police.

Mexico City. – The sale of vapes is prohibited by law at the federal level, however, in Pink Zonean area known for the presence of bars and informal commerce, there are stalls that clandestinely offer these products, even though they recognize the risk that the activity entails.
On Génova Street, which gives access mainly to bars and clubs, numerous informal stalls selling speakers, clothing, crafts, cell phone accessories and food extend in both directions of the road. Among these spaces delimited by tarps and the products, at least five stalls selling smoking items were detected, mainly lighters, rolling paper and pipes made of different materials, as well as incense. When questioned, the sellers confirmed that they also trade with vapers.
“We just can’t take them out,” declared one of the sellers while arranging his products. The merchant on the public street justified that they do not take out the electronic cigarettes, because they run the risk of being detained by the police, but added that those who sell in the area do so by order.
While the evening shift vendors avoid being seen with vapersthey also add that later, when it gets dark and more people start arriving at the bars, there are more opportunities to display the vapers. The merchants point out that these products come at different prices, “I can give you the cheapest one for 100 pesos, but if you are looking for something of higher quality, I can also get you for 600.”
The regulation against electronic cigarettes or vapers is a policy that the federal government undertook during the last six-year term. In 2022 it was decreed that its sale is prohibited, but in 2025 it has been proposed that the sanctions not only be financial fines of up to 200 thousand pesos, but also toughen the punishment with up to eight years in prison.
