The Mexican municipality is facing a wave of violence that has left at least 10 bodies in previous graves and 17 police officers prosecuted for criminal ties.

The municipality of Nicolas Romero shuddered again after the discovery of a clandestine grave in the Independencia neighborhood, where bone remains apparently belonging to at least two people were located.

The discovery was the result of a search operation led by the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) in coordination with the National Guard (GN) and the family group “Luz, Fuerza y ​​Lucha por Nuestros Desaparecidos.”

Human limbs were also found at the site, which has led authorities to expand the exploration perimeter due to the possibility that there are more buried bodies. The area was cordoned off by experts from the State Prosecutor’s Office, who continue with the exhumation and forensic analysis procedures.

“Every time we find a grave it is a mixture of pain and relief, because we continue looking for our own,” said Ana Rodríguez, a member of the group. We have pointed out for years that Nicolás Romero is a red light for disappearances and yet the authorities do not listen.”

The discovery adds to a chain of violent events that have marked the municipality in recent months. In April 2024, two graves with the bodies of ten people were located in the vicinity of San José del Vidrio, while last October four more bodies were located in an area bordering Jilotzingo.

The most serious precedent continues to be the arrest, in 2024, of 17 municipal police officers, including the then operational director Adrián Mauricio Sánchez, accused of collusion with criminal groups that operated in the region.

While the FGJEM continues the expert work at the new discovery point, search groups insist that the State of Mexico is experiencing a humanitarian crisis and demand that the state government implement a permanent search and identification plan for victims.
