Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos feels the transfer speculations have affected Relebohile Mofokeng’s form this season.
The 21-year-old attacker has only provided one assist in 12 matches this campaign and is yet to find the back of the net. New signings such as Tshepang Moremi and Oswin Appollis have impressed under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Broos, who is a big fan of Mofokeng, believes the winger has been affected by all the noise regarding his potential move to Europe. The Bafana Bafana star was linked to various teams in Saudi Arabia, USA and also Europe.
“This is not my job, to interfere with this kind of thing, [advising players on clubs to join],” Broos said as per GOAL.
“Why is Rele not at the level he was last year? It’s very clear, they made him crazy!
“You can’t ask a guy at the age of 20, that he can say yes, I’m concentrating on football, not what those guys are telling me, I’m not listening. At the end, you listen, and this is normal; you can’t blame Mofokeng for that,” he said.
Broos says it’s normal for Mofokeng to drop form
Broos gave the 21-year-old Pirates star his debut last year. The attacker has since become part of the Bafana Bafana setup despite dropping form this season.
“Maybe it’s in my job to go to those guys and say pay attention to this and blah blah blah; but that’s all I can do,” Broos added.
With the Africa Cup of Nations kicking off in the coming weeks, Broos will have to make a big decision on whether he takes Mofokeng to the tournament. With Appollis and Moremi in good form, it will be difficult for ‘President ya ma 2000’ to get a spot in the Afcon team.
