Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes Orlando Pirates are dependent on the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng and Sipho Mbule to get results.
The Buccaneers started the Betway Premiership with back-to-back defeats but have since recovered, winning three consecutive matches. They also managed to reach the MTN8 final by eliminating rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
Speaking of their league credentials, Khanye said the Buccaneers will need to be consistent and not rely on certain players.
Khanye says Pirates are ineffective without Mofokeng’s influence
“Can Pirates win the league? At Pirates you need certain players to perform, they rely on individual brilliance, you need Rele to do something special,” Khanye said on his YouTube Channel.
“Once you pocket Rele (Mofokeng) or (Sipho) Mbule, I don’t think Pirates can rise. Certain players, three, four (if they don’t show up), I don’t think Pirates can rise. It’s more of an individual team.
“We can’t question it, it comes from way back with the likes of (the late) Gift Leremi, ‘Cheese’ (Lebohang Mokoena), Tso (Benedict Vilakazi), ‘Dukuduku’ (Joseph Makhanya). Pirates need certain players for them to win. Challenging the league, they have potential,” the ex-Chiefs star added.
Mofokeng has yet to score or create an assist this season in the six matches he’s featured in. He was linked with a move away from the club but nothing materialised.
