Insecurity once again exhibited its strength in Toluca. This weekend, two armed men broke into the Tu Empeño Efectivo pawn shop, located inside Plaza Senderoand they stripped the staff of money and jewelry without the private guards doing anything to stop them.
According to witnesses, the criminals entered with their faces covered, threatened the workers and demanded the opening of the showcases. “It was as if no one noticed, the guards were nearby, but they didn’t lift a finger,” said a saleswoman who witnessed the scene.
The assailants fled on foot to the parking lot, where they boarded a vehicle that was waiting for them, disappearing before the patrols arrived.
Minutes later, agents from the Municipal Police and the Secretariat of Security of the State of Mexico cordoned off the area and began the investigations. Experts reviewed the shopping center’s surveillance cameras to identify those responsible, although as of press time no arrests were reported.
The incident adds to a long list of robberies recorded in shopping malls in the Toluca Valleywhere levels of violence have increased.
Data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System reveal that the robberies businesses in the Mexican capital grew 12% during 2025 compared to the previous year, becoming one of the most frequent crimes with the least resolution
Merchants and tenants in the area reported that the police presence is scarce and that private security elements do not have training or reaction protocols. “They pay to care, but they only observe,” said an employee at the place. They demand permanent patrols, functional cameras and a real prevention strategy in the face of the increase in robberies.
Meanwhile, the perception of insecurity continues to grow among citizens, who assure that in Toluca “neither buying, nor working, nor selling, is safe.”
