The two defendants tried for the death of a 21-year-old young man outside a nightclub in Famalicão, district of Braga, in 2022, were sentenced this Monday to 13 and a half years and 12 years in prison.

When the ruling was read, which took place at the Criminal Court of Guimarães, under strong security measures, Diogo Meireles, nicknamed ‘Xió’, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the murder and two and a half years for the theft of the victim’s cell phone, with the panel of judges deciding to apply, in legal terms, a single sentence of 13 years and six months in prison, and this defendant was also convicted. for being a repeat offender.

Bruno Ribeiro, known as ‘Spanish’, was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The defendants were accused by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) of committing, in co-authorship, a crime of qualified homicide, which has a criminal framework of up to 25 years in prison, but the court proceeded to change the legal qualification, and convicted them both of murder, in co-authorship, in the simple form, with a maximum penalty of 16 years.

For the group of judges, it was proven that the defendants “acted in common effort and will”, highlighting that the death of Hugo Ribeiro, attacked with a knife and hit in the head with a stone, next to the Noa nightclub, in the early hours of March 7, 2022, after clashes between groups, who did not know each other, was due to the actions of the two defendants.

The president of the panel of judges explained that it was not possible to determine “the reason why the dispute broke out”, adding that the defendants denied the facts and presented different and divergent versions regarding the MP’s accusation.

The crime took place in the early hours of March 7, 2022, when Bruno Ribeiro and Diogo Meireles, known as “Xió”, arrived at the Noa nightclub and were blocked from entering, then became involved in clashes with other customers of the nightlife space, ending with the death of Hugo Ribeiro, 21 years old, from being stoned and stabbed.
