If your shower isn’t draining properly and consistently pools with water, there’s a simple solution. All you need is a toilet plunger.

Diverse Plumbing & Roofing shared the simple hack for shower clogs on TikTok. If you’re experiencing a similar problem in your shower, the fix is simple with some help from your toilet plunger.
“When you’re plunging, you wanna make sure all of the plugs are closed,” the handyman suggests. “All of the air expels out of them.”
He then plunges the shower drain without removing the grate until the most satisfying draining sound occurs. “Once you get your blockage, make sure you run all the fixtures in the room,” he adds. This ensures everything is back to running smoothly and there are no more blockages.
Personally, I’ve used this hack when my kitchen sink was clogged. We have a garbage disposal that I often think can handle more (“What did you put down there, a tree?” was what my step-dad asked last time it got clogged). But the ‘ole plunger trick has worked every time.
What to do if a plunger doesn’t solve your problem
According to one home repair site, these are the best alternatives for when a plunger doesn’t fix your clog:
- Use hot water and dish soap for clogged toilets. Carefully pour it into the toilet bowl and let it sit for 15 minutes and repeat as needed.
- Try a drain snake. For clogs in sinks and shower drains, remove soap scum build-up and hair with a drain snake. If a clogged toilet is your problem, a toilet auger may work instead.
- Mix baking soda and vinegar to break down a clog. Combine one cup of baking soda and two cups of vinegar and allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes, then flush to see if the clog dissolves.
- Call a plumber. Sometimes, problems like these require professional assistance.
