Warning: spoilers ahead for the latest episode of Celebrity Traitors.

Celebrity Traitors fans… we’ve been waiting a long time for this. Three weeks, in fact.

But finally – FINALLY – after the Faithfuls had proved themselves to be some of the most useless in the history of the TV series, they caught themselves a Traitor.

And not just any Traitor. The ‘Big Dog’. The purple glove-wearing honcho. The smooth-talking…Jonathan Ross.

After evading capture for almost seven episodes, Wossy’s time finally ran out thanks to fellow Traitors Alan Carr and Cat Burns joining forces with the Faithfuls to take him down.

It’s about time that the Traitors turned on each other, if I’m being honest. They’ve been very lucky to all survive up to this point, and Alan and Cat would have aroused huge amounts of suspicion if they hadn’t followed the crowd.

Ever the showman, Jonathan couldn’t go down without making a spectacle of his exit, in a moment that’s sure to go down in Celebrity Traitors history.

As he stood up at the front of the room next to presenter Claudia Winkleman, the 64-year-old declared: ‘I’ve got no idea what everyone’s doing wrong. I cannot believe you’ve done it again.’

Joe Marler looked as though he was descending steadily into a pit of despair, shaking his head and mouthing the word ‘No’ after voting for Jonathan to be banished.

The chat show host continued: ‘I cannot believe that I’m standing here for no good reason, so I don’t want to be rude, but you’re idiots.’

Nick Mohammed’s head whipped around in shock, while Cat – who knew full well that Jonathan was a Traitor – looked confused beyond belief.

Jonathan went on: ‘But, I’m not judging, because it’s fiendish, so I’m not blaming the players, I’m blaming the game. I am now, and I have been all through the game completely Faithful.’

The other contestants held their heads in despair at the revelation… but it was all a lie, as the banished player then completed his sentence by exclaiming: ‘To the Traitors!’

The table exploded into a celebratory commotion, as the remaining players cheered and clapped, having managed to root out at Traitor at their sixth attempt.

It was just brilliantly entertaining TV.

I’ll admit it – I’d underestimated Jonathan. I knew that he was a huge fan of the show, and knew how to play the game well. But I thought that his cockiness would be his downfall, and was convinced he’d only make it a few episodes.

How wrong I turned out to be.

Jonathan might have had heat on him for several weeks, but he’s very cleverly managed to weasel his way out of seemingly impossible situations, dropping other people’s names into the conversation and steering prying eyes away.

There was no way that the Celebrity Traitors producers were ever going to let him get away with lying about his identity after being banished. It was all just a bit of fun – and as Joe aptly put it with a grin on his face, it was ‘the most ridiculous bow out ever’.

Agreed.

Take a bow Jonathan Ross. What a great game you played, and an astonishingly memorable farewell.

His final words may have been the standout moment of the episode, but there were other dramatic events that made me gasp.

Could Alan and Cat be next for the chopping block (Picture: BBC)

At the start of Wednesday night’s episode, Lucy Beaumont was murdered in plain sight, by the three Traitors. She was understandably upset to have her Celebrity Traitors journey curtailed – but the daggers she shot in Cat’s direction could have cut glass.

‘I’m not happy with you, at all,’ Lucy, while the singer maintained an expressionless look.

As Cat turned back around with her hood on, a slight awkward smile was visible on her face. ‘Sorry Lucy,’ she mumbled, to which Lucy harshly responded: ‘No, it’s not good enough.’

It was the kind of tension this series has thrived on.

Then during the roundtable, it felt as though the tension between Alan and Joe had escalated beyond being a friendly rivalry into a palpable awkwardness.

‘Alan, I’d love to hear from you, I haven’t heard a huge amount from you at roundtables,’ the rugby star announced, prompting broadcaster Kate Garraway to say: ‘Oooh.’

‘We’ve only just started love,’ the comedian quipped in response, questioning Joe’s claim that he doesn’t speak at roundtables.

The interaction had me grimacing and reaching for my popcorn in equal measure.

So what’s next? Given Jonathan received six votes at the banishment (excluding Jonathan targeting David Olusoga, and David gunning for Nick), some Faithfuls have realised that the other Traitors must have betrayed one of their own.

Could Alan and Cat be next for the chopping block, after they’re forced to carry out yet another murder in plain sight?

Celebrity Traitors returns on Thursday at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
