Oatmeal is a breakfast staple around the world, and there are loads of ways to make it to your liking. You can cook up rolled, quick or steel cut oats, depending on the texture you enjoy and how much time you have. You can stir in warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. You can make it sweet with brown sugar or maple syrup and put fruit and nuts on top, or make it savory with green onion, everything bagel seasoning and a fried egg.
But this new, viral way to serve oats has the internet on fire. @mylklabs posted a short, yet incredibly awe-inspiring video where they added an ingredient to their oats that most of us have hiding in the pantry – tea. That’s right, when making your morning oats, simply place your favorite tea bag in the bowl and pour the hot water or milk over top to steep the flavor-and nutrients right into your porridge.
The comments section quickly erupted with excitement, awe and ideas for making different versions of tea-infused oatmeal, and the post has now amassed almost 1 million views and hundreds of comments.
@mylklabs Earl grey or chai are 👌🏻
“Chai in apple cinnamon”, one person said. “Wait, can I make London Fog oats?”, asked another. “Vanilla chai oats with raisins and walnuts. Genius!”, exclaimed another commenter. “I also put a peppermint tea in black coffee and you’ll never see me with a latte again”, stated one more.
Others had a nostalgic response, “when I was a kid [and] I wanted a snack before bed my mom would make me oatmeal with chamomile, I totally forgot she used to do that”.

People Are Adding Tea to Their Morning Oats For a Boost of Flavor and Nutrition
Not only is tea a flavorful and simple addition, it’s also packed with nutrition. It contains powerful plant compounds called flavanoids and catechins that serve as antioxidants in the body’s fight against harmful compounds. Tea also contains vitamin C and minerals like magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and copper.
Some teas contain caffeine, so if you’re looking for an energy boost in the morning, tea may be the perfect addition to your oatmeal. Other teas are decaffeinated, so if you like to enjoy oats in the evening, you can still do so and get a good night’s sleep.
I’m ready to give this hack a try, and I think I’ll start with the idea of adding green tea to peaches and cream oats.
