Thomson man to spend next 15 years behind bars after killing 75-year-old wife in 2022

THOMSON, Ga. (WJBF)- Three years after James Wilson killed his wife Virginia “Sue” Nelson, he appeared before a judge and the district attorney Thursday.

After entering a plea deal in court, he was sentenced to 15 years without parole in confinement, and 20 years on probation.

The assistant DA recalling the events during the early hours of September 7th, 2022.

“The Sheriff himself was the first person to arrive on scene. When he got there, the defendant was in the front yard of the house, on his knees, holding a 38-caliber pistol to his chest. The defendant told the Sheriff, ‘I done made a mess, I killed her,” said Terry Lloyd.

After getting arrested in a standoff, Wilson was charged with murder and possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors say Wilson shot his 75-year-old wife in the head while she was sleeping.

Wilson’s attorney requesting a plea deal considering his health and age.

“We are referring now to a man who is 77 years of age. He is in decent health at this moment, he is weak. He has a hard time managing his diet, his intake. He has a hard time understanding what’s even going on with his own body,” said Grant Usry.

Judge Chip Hardin agreeing to the plea deal, sentencing Wilson to 15 years without parole in confinement, along with 20 years on probation.

“The court does find that the negotiated plea in this case serves the best interest of justice, and welfare of society,” Hardin said.

The other part of the deal prohibits Wilson from contacting Nelson’s family, unless the family initiates it.

Family members made remarks in court, reflecting on Nelson’s life before her death.

They fought back tears addressing the judge, and the defense.

“I’m not sure if I can find the strength to forgive him for what he’s done, but I will leave the ultimate judgement into God’s hands. I pray that when he stands at the gates of heaven, God shows him mercy on his soul, because only God can do that,” said Betsy Milburn, Nelson’s niece.

After completing the first 15 years of the sentence, Wilson will be 92 years old.
