Thomson’s new school emphasizes hands-on learning for kids

THOMSON, Ga. (WJBF)- The ribbon will be cut for the brand-new Maxwell Elementary School.

This is big news for children in pre-kindergarten through third grade.

The facility combines both the old Maxwell Elementary and Thomson Elementary schools.

Fewer grade levels mean greater hands-on learning with younger students.

Now the school has two safety secured vestibules in the front and back of the school

It contains 55 instructional units, 37 regular classrooms (with one outside classroom), five pre-k classrooms, four STEM labs, and more.

“We do have a full sized gymnasium in this school. It is the only school in the district besides our middle school and our high school that has a full size gymnasium. We have several interactive floor areas in that school. We also have our course room located on the back of the school that allows for easy entrance to for parents and students,” said superintendent, Mychele Rhodes.

The superintendent also says why there is a need for STEM labs at the school.

“We want to be able to provide the most hands on experiences for our students, but we also want to expose them to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. And we know that for that to happen, we have to do that exposure early on, which is why it was incredibly important for us to include the four labs in this building,” said Rhodes.

The ribbon cutting will take place at the school’s new location on East Bypass in Thomson from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

School starts August 4th.
