The Rapid Support Forces in Sudan announced the arrest of a number of its fighters suspected of committing violations in the city of El Fasher, in parallel with the continued displacement of thousands from North Kordofan due to the deteriorating security conditions.
The support forces said in a statement published late yesterday, Thursday, “In implementation of the leadership’s directives and commitment to the law and the rules of conduct and military discipline during the war, our forces arrested a number of those accused of the transgressions that accompanied the liberation of the city of El Fasher, headed by the so-called Abu Lulu.”
The statement added, “The relevant legal committees began investigating them in preparation for bringing them to justice.”
In the same context, the Rapid Support Forces said that its second commander, Abdul Rahim Dagalo, issued orders stipulating strict adherence to the rules of conduct and rules of engagement and allowing all civilians to leave the areas of hostilities and any besieged areas voluntarily and safely.
He also ordered Dagalo to refrain from recruiting children, engaging in forced disappearances, arbitrary detention of civilians, and any form of torture.
Last Sunday, the Rapid Support Forces took control of the city of El Fasher, which was the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region.
More than 36,000 civilians have been displaced since last Sunday from El Fasher due to the fighting, and many of them headed to the city of Tawila, which is 70 kilometers away and originally housed about 650,000 displaced people, according to United Nations estimates.
Total alert
The UN Security Council condemned in a statement the Rapid Support Forces attack on El Fasher, and demanded that it end.
The statement called for allowing humanitarian aid to arrive and providing safe passages for civilians, while at the same time rejecting the establishment of parallel governance structures in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces.
The statement added that there are atrocities that have been reported and that the Rapid Support is accused of committing.
For his part, Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idris said that he declared full alert among state agencies to confront the aggression and what he called ethnic cleansing in El Fasher.
He added in a speech broadcast on Sudanese television that what he described as the Rapid Support militia was committing war crimes in El Fasher and in various parts of Sudan, calling on the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities and put an end to the RSF violence.
In a parallel context, the Sudan Doctors Network announced in a press statement that 4,500 people were displaced from the city of Bara in North Kordofan due to deteriorating security conditions and continued violations by the Rapid Support Forces against civilians.
The network indicated that 1,900 people arrived in the city of El Obeid amid harsh conditions and an acute shortage of food, water and shelter, adding that some of those who arrived in the city were suffering from malnutrition, especially children and the elderly.
The army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war since April 15, 2023, which regional and international mediations have not succeeded in ending, amid worsening humanitarian suffering.
