Timothée Chalamet Revives Iconic ‘Crank That’ Dance While Promoting Marty Supreme

Timothée Chalamet has been getting strong reviews from critics for his new movie Marty Supreme. In fact, the review scores on Rotten Tomatoes are almost-perfect.

And now he’s getting buzz for a different reason: Dancing to Soulja Boy’s “Crank That.” The viral moment unfolded at the CCXP entertainment convention in São Paolo, Brazil, on December 5. The dance was a 2007 track called “Crank That (Soulja Boy).” In the viral video, Chalamet wore a green and yellow pullover (the color of the Brazilian flag) and blue pants. One video of the dance had almost 2 million views. Photos from the event showed fans crowding in to see Chalamet.

Fan Reaction to Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Crank That’ Dance Was Mixed

Video of Chalamet dancing on stage went viral on X. Fans weighed in on the comment thread. “He hit that way too well,” wrote one. “He’s honestly just living his best life,” wrote another person.

“This is so iconic oh my gosh,” another fan proclaimed. But not everyone was impressed. “Man that dance was ugly,” wrote another person. “That is not dancing,” a person weighed in.

In a second video, Chalamet removed his green-and-yellow pullover to reveal a sweatshirt with the word USA stamped on it. He then tossed the pullover into the crowd. Finally, Chalamet took a fan’s flag showing his face and put it over his shoulders as the crowd went wild.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Josh Safdie then joined Chalamet to discuss the film on stage. “If you don’t like good movies, don’t go see Marty Supreme,” Chalamet said at the fan event, THR reported.

“What I take from Marty — what I take with me today — is to keep dreaming, keep believing in yourself, don’t fear negative opinions. If you’ve got the opportunity to come out and do ‘Crank That’ in São Paulo — you know what I’m saying?” he added. Chalamet plays a ping pong player in the movie.

Safdie described the film as being “about a hardcore dreamer” and “everything that the world does to a dream to kill it and suppress it,” THR reported, adding that Chalamet said he is influenced as an actor by “the greats before me — the Denzel Washingtons, the Leonardo DiCaprios, the people who laid a path that you aspire to as a young man, as a young artist.”

Timothée Chalamet Has Performed the Dance Moves Before

Chalamet then took off the USA sweatshirt to reveal a white tank top underneath. He then threw the sweatshirt into the crowd as well.

According to People, Chalamet has performed the moves in public before. In December 2024, he showed a podcast host named Brittany Broski “the dance’s signature moves,” according to People.

People noted that it’s well-known that Chalamet likes to dance. The trailer for the new movie even shows Chalamet dancing, according to Billboard. The Marty Supreme movie is already generating Oscar buzz for Chalamet and other stars, Billboard reported.

“Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness,” the caption reads on Rotten Tomatoes.
