The second new Total War game of the month, after Medieval 3, has been confirmed and this one is going to be on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Henry Cavill may be the world’s most attractive Warhammer 40,000 fan but it turns out he’s not the only celeb with a penchant for the grim dark future of humanity. David Harbor appeared at The Game Awards, proclaiming his love for tabletop gaming in general and Warhammer in particular, and seemed genuinely excited about the fact that he’s in Total War: Warhammer 40,000.
Rumours had suggested that the second new Total War annoucement this month, after Medieval 3, would be either Star Wars or Warhammer 40,000 but it became increasingly obvious that it was the latter that was getting the treatment – even though some insiders suggest a Star Wars game is still a possibility in the future.
Whether you like Warhammer or not the fantasy version of the universe resulted in three of the best Total War games ever, so we have high hopes for this sci-fi follow-up.
As you can imagine, there was only a few seconds of gameplay, but it looked fantastic in terms of scale and visuals, with a massive ground battle zooming out to show the view of an entire solar system. Although we can’t imagine that the team behind Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War 4 are happy to have such close competition all of a sudden.
It’s implied you’ll be fighting across the whole Milky Way, which is well beyond the scale of previous Total War games. Developer Creative Assembly hasn’t gone into detail about how it will all work but they have confirmed you can wipe out entire planets from space.
The four races so far confirmed are Space Marines, Orks, Aledari (aka Eldar, aka space elves), and Astra Militarum (bog standard human cannon fodder).

You’ll be able to customise all your troops, just as if you were painting a miniature, and modify their ‘tactical abilities, signature traits, and arcane wargear’.
Although Creative Assembly announced that their new game engine will support console versions of Total War, Medieval 3 has so far only been announced for PC. Warhammer 40,000 will be on consoles though, which is interesting.
Whether they’ll all be released at the same time is unclear, as there’s no release date or year so far for any version, but it wouldn’t be surprising if came out first in early access, but only on PC.
