Transportation: Claudia Sheinbaum tours “El Insurgente” Train; enters mechanical testing phase

The Government of Mexico announced that the Interurban Train Mexico-Toluca “El Insurgente” entered its final phase of testing, a process that will last approximately three months, with the goal that by the end of January 2026 the complete route, from Toluca to Observatorio, is operating 100% for the public.

During a tour at the Observatorio station, President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that the civil works and practically all the electromechanical installation of the project have already been completed, so the technical verification and certification period begins prior to its total opening..

“We have already finished the civil work of the Mexico-Mexico City-Toluca train, ‘El Insurgente’. All the electromechanics are practically finished and from now on the testing period begins, which is very important because it requires testing of the signaling, the certification, everything that has to do with the train.”

She added: “There are around three months of testing to be able to fine-tune it. That means that at the end of January 2026 the ‘El Insurgente’ train will be able to be used for the entire population,” explained the federal president.

Sheinbaum He highlighted that the Observatorio station will be one of the most relevant in the country’s modern railway system, serving as a connection node between different means of transportation such as the Metro, the Interurban Train and other public transportation lines.

“As you can see in this Observatorio station, it is perhaps the most important station that has been built in the history of Mexico to be able to communicate different modes of transportation: train, Metro and public transportation. It has 15 thousand square meters and in November Line 1 of the Metro will be launched,” he indicated.

With the entry into full operation, the journey between Toluca and Mexico City will be reduced from two and a half hours to just 40 minutes, which represents a substantial improvement in travel times and quality of life for thousands of users.

“What people who come from Toluca to Mexico City do today, practically in two hours or two and a half hours, is going to be reduced to 40 minutes. And from Observatorio they will be able to connect with Metro Line 1 to different points in the city. It is something extraordinary, quality transportation that does not pollute and improves the quality of life,” he assured.

The president recalled that the project, initiated during the government of former President Enrique Peña Nieto, was resumed and expanded by the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who promoted its continuation to Santa Fe, and included the Vasco de Quiroga station, with the purpose of benefiting popular neighborhoods of Álvaro Obregón and connecting with the Fourth Section of the Chapultepec Forest, the Cablebús and the University of Health.

Although the train will be in full service at the beginning of 2026, the president announced that the complementary works around Observatory (such as a vehicular depression and additional road works) will continue until June of the same year.

Sheinbaum concluded his message by thanking the technical team and the companies participating in this infrastructure work, which, he said, represents an achievement of Mexican engineering and a decisive step towards a modern, sustainable and safe transportation system for millions of people.
