On Tuesday, a scene of panic occurred on the highway Mexico–Querétaro when a truck suddenly started to catch fire in the north lane, right in front of the Arkana shopping center, in the municipality of Cuautitlán Izcalli.
Within minutes, flames engulfed the body of the vehicle, raising a dense cloud of smoke visible from several kilometers away.
Motorists traveling through the area were the first to alert the emergency services, which allowed a prompt response by municipal firefighters and Civil Protection elements.
The flames, fanned by the cleaning products transported by the unit, threatened to spread to other vehicles, so the road was partially closed while the situation was controlled.
According to the first reports, the driver managed to get off in time, avoiding injuries. Even so, the fire completely consumed the cargo and the metal structure of the vehicle.
The column of black smoke caused confusion among motorists, who braked suddenly, unleashing a severe bottleneck which lasted for more than an hour.
“Suddenly we saw the fire coming out of the chest. It was impressive, people didn’t know whether to move forward or stop,” said Laura Pérez, a merchant who observed the incident from a nearby bridge.
“We thought it could explode, because the smoke was very thick and the heat could be felt several meters away,” she added, visibly dismayed.
Traffic and Social Proximity elements cordoned off the area to avoid new incidents. An ambulance provided preventive care to the driver and two people who had a nervous breakdown, with no serious injuries reported. Cooling and cleaning efforts continued until the pavement was free of debris and spilled fuel.
