In a post on Truth Social, the two-time Republican President said the country possesses “more nuclear weapons than any other,” a capability he claimed was achieved through extensive modernization during his first term in office.
While acknowledging the immense destructive potential of such weapons, Trump wrote that he “hated to do it” but saw “no choice” given rising global competition. He further noted that Russia ranks second and China “a distant third” in nuclear capability but warned that Beijing could reach parity within five years.
The President added that he has directed the Department of War to begin nuclear testing “on an equal basis” with other nations, declaring that the process would start immediately.
The announcement came as Trump Chinese President Xi Jinping prepared for a pivotal meeting in South Korea on Thursday aimed at negotiating an end to the long-running trade dispute between Washington and Beijing. It is set to be their first face-to-face meet Trump began his second term and reignited the tariff battle that saw China hit with steep import duties.
