US President Donald Trump expected on Wednesday that he would meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “in the not too distant future.”
Trump told reporters on Air Force One on his way to South Korea, “At some point we will deal with North Korea. I think they want that and I want that too.”
Trump announced last week that he “very much wants” to meet the North Korean leader during his visit to South Korea.
The US President arrived in Gyeongju in the east of the Korean Peninsula on Wednesday morning, where he will participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
It is noteworthy that Trump – during his first term – met Kim on June 30, 2019 in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas.
Then, US President Donald Trump entered North Korea on foot on Sunday, accompanied by Kim Jong Un.
Trump crossed the border separating the two Koreas in the village of Panmunjom, where the armistice was signed in 1953.
A historic step
With this historic step, Trump became the first American president to set foot on North Korean territory, after he crossed the demarcation line that divides the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas.
After the handshake, Trump said, “It’s a great day for the world… I’m proud to cross the line” to North Korea.
As for Kim, he stated, “We want to leave the past behind us and move toward the future,” and expressed his desire to take advantage of the moment “to come out with good news that no one expects,” adding, “We would not have held this meeting without the wonderful relationship between us.”
Kim crossed the border into South Korea with Trump, and the President of South Korea joined them, and Trump and Kim later held a closed meeting.
