US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he did not come to South Korea to see Canada, amid a trade dispute with the northern neighbor of the United States.
“To those asking, we did not come to South Korea to see Canada,” Trump wrote shortly after his arrival in Jeonju, on the Truth Social platform.
Trump is scheduled to attend a group dinner later today, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will also attend.
Carney said on Monday that he was ready to sit down for trade talks with Trump when the president was ready.
Last week, Trump announced the severance of trade talks with Ottawa and the imposition of an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods after a political advertisement in Ontario used an excerpt from a speech by former Republican President Ronald Reagan in which he said that tariffs cause trade wars and economic disaster.
The trade relationship between Canada and the United States constitutes one of the largest trade relations in the world. In 2024, the total value of Canada’s imports and exports of goods traded with the United States exceeded one trillion Canadian dollars ($762 billion) for the third year in a row, according to the “Statistics Canada” platform.
