Brazil and the United States are experiencing an unprecedented diplomatic crisis, after Trump imposed 50% tariffs on most Brazilian products, following the trial in which former president Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison.
Donald Trump had already stated that a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with his Brazilian counterpart was in his plans. “I think we will meet, yes. We have already seen each other briefly at the United Nations General Assembly”, he told journalists on Friday on board the presidential plane Air Force One, while traveling to Malaysia.
When asked about the possibility of reducing the 50% tariffs imposed on imports from Brazil, the North American leader left the door open, stating that he was willing to do so “if the circumstances are appropriate”.
Also on Friday, Lula said he was “interested in this meeting”, with the aim of “defending Brazil’s interests and showing that there was an error in the tariffs on Brazil”.
