Donald Trump announced this Tuesday an escalation in the fight against Venezuelan “drug traffickers” and says that “soon” the American army will carry out attacks “on land”. In a statement cited by CNNthe American President threatened the South American country with a land invasion: “We’re going to start doing these attacks on land as well. We know where they live. We know where the bad guys live and we’re going to start that very soon.”
The conflict between the two countries broke out in the summerwhen the Americans sent a naval and air force to the Caribbean Sea, in waters close to Venezuela, as part of a strategy to combat drug trafficking. Twenty vessels allegedly linked to this activity, they were sunk and around eighty suspected traffickers died.
Now, Trump, who is commander-in-chief of the American armed forces, claims that naval strikes are “not enough” and that it will be “easier” to attack by land.
Pope Leo XIV, who is American, suggested this Tuesday that the United States give priority to “dialogue” with Venezuela rather than an invasion. “It is preferable to prioritize dialogue, possibly pressure, including economic pressure, but look for another way to promote change, if that is the decision of the United States”, declared the leader of the Catholic Church in a press conference on board the plane taking him back to the Vatican after a visit to Lebanon.
Trump justifies this operation as “a matter of national security” and accused Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of running a drug cartel.
Caracas denied this and responded that Washington’s objective is to overthrow the Venezuelan President and “get a hold” of the Latin American country’s oil.
