Donald Trump said Monday that the Ukraine “you can still win the war” with Russiadespite having expressed doubts about this possibility.
“You can still win it. I don’t think they will, but they can still win it. I never said I would win it. Anything can happen. They know that war is a very strange thing. A lot of bad things happen,” Trump told reporters at the White House, before receiving the Australian Prime MinisterAnthony Albanese.
Trump sought bring Russians and Ukrainians closer togetherbut their positions range from supporting Ukraine to ceding territory to the invaders. Last week he proposed that the border between the two states should correspond to the current front line.
In his statement, he highlighted that “the majority of people who die are soldiers (…), between five thousand and seven thousand a week. It’s incredible. It’s a bloodbath. The worst since the Second World War.”
He added that this situation does not affect the US “in any way. We do not pay for the weapons that (the Ukrainians) have. NATO buys the weapons from us, as you know.”
“They were the magnificent B-2s. It was a perfect maneuver that had been rehearsed for 22 years. It was a perfect mission and when it ended, the Middle East opened up”, he said.
The pilots “said they had never had a president who allowed this to be done, but I left it and the Middle East opened up completely. It dispelled the dark cloud that was over the Middle East,” he added.
Trump received Albanese, when they approached issues such as the submarine business and the trade in minerals and so-called rare earths.
