US President Donald Trump warned this Thursday that Israel will lose the support of the United States if it takes the decision to annex the West Bank, indicating that he gave his word to Arab countries that this would not happen.
“That’s not going to happen”repeated Donald Trump three times in an interview with Time magazine published today, one day after the Israeli parliament approved, in first reading, a bill for the annexation of the West Bank. “It can’t be done now”added the ruler.
In the same interview, Donald Trump stated that he intends to visit Gaza “soon” and added that he foresees an imminent relaunch of Israel’s relations with the Arab world, whose leaders he pressured to accept his peace plan for the Gaza Strip.
“Bibi, you can’t fight the world. You can fight individual battles, but the world is against you”recalled Trump in his statements to Time, citing the words with which he sought to convince the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to support the North American proposal to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip, at the end of a “monologue full of insults”.
The North American President even suggested that, if Netanyahu did not accept the plan and the ceasefire with Hamas, the historic alliance between them would end.
“It was a very direct and blunt statement to Bibi,” confirmed Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, a witness to the conversation.
Trump also reported how Israel’s attack on Hamas negotiators in Qatar in early September hampered efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict in the Palestinian enclave and how this episode left him enraged.
The American leader classified the bombing in Doha as “terrible” and considered Netanyahu’s decision a “tactical error” that violated the sovereignty of Qatar, an ally of the United States (USA) and mediator, together with Washington, in the peace talks for Gaza.
However, for the American leader, the incident also represented an opportunity to demonstrate to Arab countries that the war in Gaza could turn into a regional conflict and thus reinforce support for his peace plan.
The intention to visit the Palestinian enclave soon aims to boost reconstruction and development efforts in the devastated Gaza Strip.
Trump also suggested that he is considering asking Israel for the release of Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, considered a unifying figure who could replace Mahmoud Abbas at the head of the Palestinian National Authority (ANP).
Following strong support for his plan for the Gaza Strip, Trump hopes to achieve, by the end of the year, the objective of expanding the Abraham Accords, launched during his first presidential term and aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and neighboring Arab countries, with a special focus on ensuring the accession of Saudi Arabia, a central actor in the region.
According to Time, the “optimistic vision” of the President of the United States translates into greater economic integration between Israelis and Arab countries, including free trade agreements, an energy network in Israel and railway lines connecting the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf, with Trump as an essential figure in the implementation of the projects.
