US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, expressed great anger towards Somali immigrants, saying that they should not be welcome in the United States.
Trump’s violent attack on Somalis comes as a scandal unfolds in Minnesota, where prosecutors say more than a billion dollars went to non-existent social services, largely through fraudulent invoices to Americans of Somali origin.
Trump said at a meeting of his administration that the Somalis in their country “do not have anything, they are just killing each other,” adding that “their country is not in good shape and there is a reason for that. Their country stinks, we do not want them in our country.”
According to Agence France-Presse, Trump has often criticized minorities and promoted false conspiracy theories, including that former President Barack Obama was born in Kenya and not in the United States.
Trump said at his administration meeting, “We are facing a turning point,” and continued, “We can move forward in one direction or another, and we will be moving forward in the wrong direction if we continue to receive garbage into our country,” adding that Somali Americans “do not contribute anything,” criticizing Ilhan Omar, the Democratic representative from Minnesota, who originally hails from Somalia.
Garbage and obsession
The American President continued, saying, “Ilhan Omar is trash, and her friends are trash,” and added, “Let them go back to where they came from and fix it.”
The Democratic representative later responded to Trump – in a tweet on the X platform – by saying, “His obsession with me is scary. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs.”
Last week, Trump announced the cancellation of the temporary protection from deportation status enjoyed by Somali immigrants in the state of Minnesota, describing the move as a measure to combat crime.
Prosecutors are investigating several schemes to steal Minnesota taxpayer money, including by groups that falsely claimed to feed children during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The state of Minnesota has historically leaned toward the Democrats, and its history is rich in receiving refugees, and it has a large Somali community.
The scandal has a greater political dimension, as it affects Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz, who was the party’s candidate for vice president in last year’s elections.
Last week, Trump separately ordered a halt to the issuance of all visas to Afghans, following the shooting by an Afghan of two members of the National Guard in Washington, in an attack that left one dead and one wounded.
Afghan Rahmanullah Lakanwal belonged to a “partner force” supported by the CIA in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban, before he entered the United States as part of the resettlement program after the US military withdrawal in 2021.
