Trump’s advisor calls for rapid support to protect civilians in El Fasher news

Massad Boulos, advisor to US President Donald Trump for African affairs, said that the world is watching with great concern the actions of the Rapid Support Forces and the situation in the city of El Fasher in Sudan, calling for the protection of civilians.

Boulos called for opening humanitarian corridors “immediately” to enable civilians in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, to reach safe areas, saying that the Rapid Support Forces must move immediately to protect civilians in the city.

On Sunday morning, the Rapid Support Forces announced their control of the city of El Fasher, after a siege that lasted more than a year.

Sudanese military sources told Al Jazeera that the Sudanese army evacuated the division headquarters in the city of El Fasher for “tactical reasons.”

If El Fasher falls, this will mean RSF control over all five states of the Darfur region, and dividing the country between an east controlled by the Sudanese army and a west under RSF control.

An urgent humanitarian truce

The US President’s Advisor for African Affairs announced yesterday, Saturday, that the international Quartet discussed, the day before yesterday, Friday in Washington, efforts to reach an “urgent humanitarian truce and permanent ceasefire” in Sudan, and formed a joint committee to coordinate on the urgent priorities in the country.

The international quartet was formed, led by the United States, last September, with the aim of reaching a political settlement in Sudan, and also includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt.

Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that many regional and international mediations have not succeeded in ending.

The war left about 20,000 dead and displaced more than 15 million people, both displaced and refugees, according to international and local reports.
