Going through a security checkpoint at the airport can be a pain, with long lines and a stressful screening process. However, the TSA has made a new announcement that will help some people avoid some of that stress.
Back in 2013, the TSA rolled out TSA PreCheck, allowing eligible passengers who enroll in the service to have a faster, more efficient, and more convenient screening process.
Now, there’s a deal going on for those looking to gain. TSA PreCheck status.
What is TSA PreCheck?
Beginning in 2013, the TSA rolled out the TSA PreCheck program, which allowed eligible travelers to enroll in the service and bypass the standard line at airport security into a dedicated TSA PreCheck line, which is often significantly shorter than the standard line.
In addition to the shorter lines, the screening process is also less rigorous as TSA PreCheck travelers don’t have to remove their shoes, light outerwear, belt, laptop, and liquids (in your 3-1-1 bag) when going through security.
It’s worth noting that the TSA has since rolled back its rule requiring travelers to remove their shoes at TSA checkpoints, so that is no longer a perk unique to TSA PreCheck travelers.
Who is Eligible For TSA PreCheck?
TSA PreCheck is available for U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or lawful permanent residents who are considered to be low-risk travelers.
To be eligible for TSA PreCheck, travelers cannot have a criminal record for certain offenses like murder, extortion, or espionage, and cannot have pending criminal charges for certain offenses.
Applicants will need to complete an online application and attend an in-person interview and background check at an enrollment center. They will need to provide a valid form of photo identification and proof of citizenship or lawful permanent resident status.
Application fees typically range from $77.95 to $85, and it is good for five years after approval.
Is TSA PreCheck Worth it?
As airport security gets more convenient and efficient across the board, it’s fair to wonder whether or not TSA PreCheck is even worth it these days.
While there have been recent changes to make airport security more convenient for all travelers, like the TSA’s decision to allow all travelers to keep their shoes on when going through airport security, there are still significant perks to being a TSA PreCheck traveler.
TSA PreCheck still allows for shorter lines and a more convenient screening process and is especially worth it for frequent fliers.
“There are still a lot of compelling benefits for PreCheck,” said Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research Group, a travel industry market research and advisory firm, via CNBC.
