Tyla crowned ‘best afrobeats’ act again at MTV VMAs

Tyla has made history again, winning her second MTV Video Music Award. She is proving that South African artists continue to shape the global music stage.

At the 2025 ceremony in New York, the star walked away with the Best Afrobeats award for her single Push 2 Start.

TYLA’S VMA TRIUMPH

This marks back-to-back wins for the singer after her 2024 triumph for Water, which made her the first South African to claim a VMA.

Her latest victory cements her growing status as a leading voice in Afrobeats and a global pop force.

Speaking after her win, Tyla shared her gratitude and excitement. “I’m very excited, the competition was very tough.

Shout-out to all the nominees, shout-out to Africa and my team. It’s just a blessing to be here winning another award,” she said.

TYLA’S NEW UPCOMING ALBUM

The Grammy winner also gave fans something to look forward to, teasing that her next album is on the way. “It’s coming and it’s coming in hot,” she promised.

The Best Afrobeats category featured some of the genre’s biggest names, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, and Skillibeng.

Tyla’s win against such a strong field reflects the impact she is making on the scene.

THE RED CARPET LOOK

On the red carpet, Tyla also made headlines. She wore a vintage beige Chanel mini-dress from the 1993 Spring Collection, once modelled by Claudia Schiffer.

Gold medallions from Pandora added sparkle to the look, with fashion critics praising her bold choice.

OTHER WINNERS

While Tyla flew the flag for South Africa, Lady Gaga stole the night overall. She bagged four awards, including the coveted Artist of the Year title.

Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter also won three trophies each.

The night featured iconic performances. Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes and Ricky Martin all received special honours for their contributions to music.
