U.S. Increased Travel Advisory Risk to African Nation This Week

The United States Department of State issued an updated travel advisory for Sierra Leone on Monday, asking travelers to “exercise increased caution” if they must visit the West African nation.

The new travel advisory for Sierra Leone is a Level 2, which falls below Level 3 (“Reconsider Travel”) and Level 4 (“Do not travel”). Other recent nations that have received Level 2 travel advisories include Armenia, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.

According to the State Department, there are three reasons to beware going to Sierra Leone:

  • Crime
  • Civil Unrest
  • Inadequate Health Infrastructure

Crime

The State Department warns that violent crimes like robbery and assault occur “frequently,” especially in Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone.

“Do not travel outside the Freetown peninsula after nightfall,” the department warns. “There are increased safety hazards and security concerns at night. U.S. government employees in Sierra Leone are prohibited from travel outside the capital after dark. The U.S. Embassy in Freetown cannot offer emergency services outside Freetown at night.”

Police are also unreliable in their response to crime because of a lack of resources.

Civil Unrest

Demonstrations and protests often pop up with “little to no warning,” says the State Department.

“They often develop around political issues, large events, or holidays,” the travel advisory adds.

Medical Infrastructure

Sierra Leone’s medical services are lacking, particularly when compared to the United States.

Pharmacies are poorly regulated, and local medications may not be safe for consumption. Medical facilities and hygiene also lag behind their American counterparts.

What to do if you must travel to Sierra Leone

If you have to go to Sierra Leone for work or other reasons, the state department has several recommended steps to take, including the following:

  • Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as expensive watches, jewelry, or smartphones.
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
  • Keep travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
