U.S. Open Tennis Star Pleads for Return of Stolen Trophy

Sorana Cirstea, a Romanian tennis champ, is begging for the return of her trophy that was stolen from her New York City hotel room while she was competing in the U.S. Open.

“Whoever stole my Cleveland trophy from room 314 at The Fifty Sonesta please give it back!” Cirstea, 35, wrote on her Instagram Story on Saturday, August 30. “It has NO material value, just sentimental value. It would be (greatly) appreciated!”

Cirstea was eliminated from singles play on Thursday, two days before she announced the theft.

The trophy in question, which was allegedly taken from her hotel room in Midtown Manhattan, was earned earlier this month when the tennis pro won her third career singles title in the Cleveland warmup to the U.S. Open. The win marked her first harcourt singles title since 2008.

Cirstea lost in the second round of the 2025 U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows to 11th seed Karolina Muchova. She was also competing in the women’s doubles but she and partner Anna Kalinskaya lost in the first round.
