The European Union (EU) warned this Monday of the danger of concentrating all the pressure in negotiations for a ceasefire on Ukraine, following the meeting between Washington and the Kremlin, scheduled for Tuesday.
“I am afraid that all the pressure will be exerted on the weaker side, as Ukraine’s surrender is the easiest way to end this war,” said the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, at a press conference in Brussels.
On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of the President of the United States of America (USA), Donald Trump, for peace negotiations in the conflict in Ukraine, which began with an invasion by Russia on February 24, 2022.
At the end of a ministerial meeting with the defense ministers of the 27 countries of the European community bloc, Kaja Kallas warned that the objective is to end the war, preventing it from “resuming again in a few years”.
“If we want to stop this war from spreading [a outros países e regiões]we must exert all pressure on the aggressor, that is, Russia”, he warned.
The meeting between the White House negotiator and Vladimir Putin will take place in Moscow, after meetings between Ukrainian and US authorities over the weekend.
The proposal for a ceasefire with a view to achieving peace was presented by Donald Trump and had 28 initial points, which included the cession to Russia of the Ukrainian territories that they have occupied since 2022 and also the Crimean peninsula (occupied since 2014), as well as a reduction to practically half the number of soldiers in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The European Union is being excluded from the entire process by the United States of America.
Not only Kaja Kallas, but also the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Council, António Costa, criticized Washington’s decision to exclude the EU from decisions that will have as one of their consequences a new configuration of the security architecture on the European continent.
