The idea of placing data centers underwater may sound futuristic, but China has already taken this step. Highlander’s first commercial underwater data center was launched in Hainan. This innovation aims to reduce the enormous cooling costs associated with traditional data centers. Using ocean currents for cooling reduces costs by up to 90%, enabling 40% higher computing power compared to land-based systems.
Microsoft has successfully experimented with underwater data centers before, but not on this commercial scale. The advantages of such centers are obvious: In addition to the reduced cooling costs, water consumption is also drastically reduced, which is particularly important in water-scarce regions. In the US, OpenAI plans to build new data centers in Texas and New Mexico, regions not exactly known for their abundance of water.
Meanwhile, Amazon is pursuing an even more ambitious plan: building AI data centers in space. These should not only reduce water consumption to zero, but also offer unlimited capacities. With large solar arrays as an energy source, these centers could theoretically scale indefinitely. The European Union supports this idea, and some companies have already conducted successful test launches.
The challenges of water availability and infrastructure are not limited to the United States. Data centers in the UK and other parts of Europe, such as Spain and Greece, are also facing similar problems. The EU plans to triple its data center capacity in the next few years, making research into alternative designs such as floating or submerged centers all the more urgent.
