Unemployment in Mexico: Inegi reported on the rate in October

The unemployment rate in Mexico reached 2.6% of the economically active population (EAP) last October, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Friday.

The unemployment data is lower than the 2.5% rate for the same month in 2024, although higher than the 3% rate last September, the autonomous body specified in its report.

The unemployed population was 1.6 million people and the unemployment rate (TD) was 2.6% of the EAP. Compared to October 2024, the unemployed population increased by 96 thousand people and the TD was higher by 0.1 percentage points, detailed the Inegi.

The EAP for the tenth month of the year reached 62.5 million people aged 15 and over, which represented a participation rate of 59.9% and an active population greater by 1.1 million compared to October 2024. Of the EAP, 60.9 million people were employed during October, one million more than in the same month a year before.

Underemployed people, that is, those who declared they had the need and availability to work more hours, were 4.6 million, 7.5% of the employed population, a percentage lower than the 9.4% registered in October 2024.

By sectors and informality

Informal workers in July totaled 33.9 million, which raised the informality rate to 55.7%.
The employed population by sector of activity was distributed as follows: 44.6% in services; 19.7% in commerce; 16.1% in manufacturing; 10.3% in agricultural activities; and 7.9% in construction.

In “other economic activities”, which include mining, electricity, water and gas supply, 0.6% of the population was employed, while 0.8% did not specify activity.

By gender, the female EAP in October was 25.3 million and the male EAP was 35.6 million, with a participation rate of 46.7% in women of working age and 74.9% in men.

The figures reflect the economic behavior of Mexico, which fell to -0.2% in the third quarter of the year, amid the uncertainty due to the trade war unleashed by the United States and after the 1.5% GDP growth in 2024.
