Union denounces obstacles to workers’ strike in health and schools

The National Union of Workers of Services and Entities with Public Purposes (STSS) denounced this Thursday that there are impediments to the strike, particularly among nursesin several health units across the country.

“We are currently at the head of the IPO, in Porto, receiving numerous complaints from hospital institutions that are not allowing workers to join the strike”, the general secretary of the union (STTS), Matilde Pereira, told Lusa news agency.

According to the union leader, information is being disseminated that the strike has been called off: “The administrations are giving the idea that the strike has been called off. It is the unions who call off the strikes”, declared the leader.

The union leader highlighted that she is receiving complaints from several places, namely the Hospital de Santa Maria da Feira: “We have several situations in which our strike is being hampered”. The union is still collecting data on adherence to the strike, declared for this Thursday, between 00:00 and 23:59.

The State Workers’ Union (STMO) also has a strike called for today, which includes non-teaching staff.

Strike in schools with participation over 70%

In the education sector, constraints have also been observed. Workers working for parents’ associations are replacing non-teaching employees on strike in schools in the Cascais area, where membership is between 70% and 80%, a union source told Lusa.

“This situation has happened in the past and is illegal. There has even been a circular from the General Education Inspectorate saying that they cannot do this”, said Helder Sá, general secretary of the National Union of Workers of the State, Local Authorities and Entities with Public and Social Purposes (STMO).

“We have already confirmed at the Escola Básica do Arneiro, in the municipality of Cascais, that there were employees from the parents’ association looking after the children”, he explained, indicating that these situations occur more at the basic education level.

Participation in the strike in schools is “highly popular”, because workers “want better working conditions”, added the same source, indicating that a round is being carried out to collect more data, particularly in the Sintra and Lisbon area.
