The Trump administration has its sights set on military installations in Venezuela, having planned an attack that could happen at any moment, according to the American newspaper “Miami Herald”. At the basis of the offensive is the North American campaign to combat drug traffickingmore specifically against the “Soles” drug cartel.
The attacks aim to destroy facilities allegedly used by drug trafficking organizations which, according to the United States Government, are led by the Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro, and by members of his regime. The US administration also says that the cartel exports around 500 tons of cocaine every year to Europe and the United States.
The Miami newspaper states that the targets, selected in order to undermine the hierarchy of the cartelcould be hit by air “in a matter of days or even hours”. AThe sources consulted refused to answer whether Maduro would be one of those targeted. However, “one [das fontes] Said your time is running out”.
“Maduro is about to find himself backed into a corner and may soon discover that he cannot fly out of the country, even if he decided to do so”quote or “Miami Herald”. “What’s worse for him is that, right now, there is more than one general trying to capture and hand him over, fully aware that it’s one thing to talk about death and another to see it coming.”
The White House doubled the reward for anyone with information that could lead to Maduro’s arrest, offering 50 million dollars (around 43 million euros), the largest reward of its kind ever offered, also promising 25 million (around 22 million euros) for the capture of his ‘lieutenants’including the Minister of Defense, Vladimir Padrino López, and the Minister of the Interior, Diosdado Cabello, who, according to the newspaper, is believed to be heading the cartel’s operations.
“Anonymous sources don’t know what they’re talking about”says Anna Kelly, deputy press secretary at the White House, cited by “Miami Herald”. “Any announcement about Venezuela policy would come directly from the President.”
A presence of warships Americans in Venezuelan waters on Wednesday was seen as a threat to the country’s sovereignty. The military presence in the region – part of the campaign to combat drug trafficking – is, furthermore, understood as interference in the country’s internal affairs, which would have the ultimate objective of promoting a change in the regime, removing Maduro.
