Universal Music Group NV has reached an agreement with AI-powered music startup Udio to resolve a copyright dispute and work together on a new commercial music and streaming service. Udio plans to launch the new platform next year, powered by AI technology trained on licensed tracks from Universal artists. The subscription-based service aims to offer a new user experience where fans can customize, stream and share music responsibly.
Universal’s artists, including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Elton John, will be compensated through the legal settlement and new licensing agreements for recorded music and publishing rights. These agreements create additional revenue opportunities for UMG artists and songwriters. Universal Music CEO Lucian Grainge emphasized that these new agreements with Udio demonstrate the company’s commitment to doing the right thing for their artists and songwriters. By collaborating with Udio, they can foster a healthy commercial AI ecosystem where artists, songwriters, music companies and technology companies can thrive and create incredible experiences for fans.
Universal, along with Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group, had sued Udio and Suno – another AI music startup – last year. The lawsuit accused the companies of unlawfully training their AI models on massive amounts of copyrighted audio recordings. Suno and Udio are among the pioneering startups using generative AI to automate the music creation process and create new songs from preset lyrics.
Financial terms of the legal settlement were not disclosed. Udio’s existing product will continue to be available to creators until the new product launches, but content will be controlled within a “protected area” and fingerprinting, filtering and other measures will be added to the service.
