University of Sheffield charity walk raises tens of thousands for neurological disease research

An annual University of Sheffield charity walk has raised tens of thousands for neurological disease research.

Earlier today (Friday 27 June), more than 400 staff, students, and people linked to the university took part in this year’s Big Walk in the Peak District.

The fundraising event – first held in 2015 – includes a 20-mile route and a 31-mile route.

Walkers taking part today were raising money to support University of Sheffield research into neurological diseases such as dementia, stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

At the time of writing, more than £72,000 has been raised from 3800 supporters.

This will go towards new cutting edge equipment to enhance research, improve understanding, and advance treatments to slow the progression of neurological conditions.

In 2024. over £124,000 was raised for research into Motor Neuron Disease.

The Sheffield Institute for Transational Neuroscience (SITraN) specialises in pioneering research in the field.

In 2019, it was awarded both the Queen’s Anniversary Award and The Future NHS Parliamentary Award.
