UPDATE | Precautionary suspensions for Milnerton High School bullies

Milnerton High School has issued precautionary suspensions to eight learners in connection with a vicious assault on a Grade 10 (Standard 8) pupil that was captured on video and widely circulated on social media this week.

The school’s principal, Gert JP van Tonder, confirmed the suspensions in an official communication shared by United Democratic Movement (UDM) Deputy President Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, who had earlier brought national attention to the incident.

Internal investigation

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said the disciplinary measures are part of an ongoing internal investigation into the incident, which occurred late last week, shortly after the school day ended.

The disturbing footage shows a 16-year-old learner being physically and verbally assaulted by a group of boys, reportedly including at least one member of the school’s First XV, while other students looked on – some cheering.

“We want to make it clear that bullying, intimidation, and any form of assault cannot and will not be tolerated at Milnerton High School,” said Van Tonder.

“These behaviours are completely contrary to the values of our school community and will always be dealt with firmly and fairly.”

The School Governing Body approved the suspensions to ensure an impartial inquiry could proceed.

Van Tonder also acknowledged growing concerns over possible protest action, which has been circulating on social media.

He assured parents that the safety of students remains a top priority, and any developments will be communicated via official channels.

‘Criminal assault’

Meanwhile, Joy Maimela, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, condemned the attack, calling it “not merely bullying but bordering on criminal assault.”

“Schools must be safe spaces for learning and growth, not fear and humiliation,” Maimela said, urging swift action from all relevant authorities, including the Department of Basic Education and law enforcement.

The WCED earlier confirmed that more than one learner was assaulted during the incident and that counselling support has been offered to the victims.

Police have opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, though no arrests have been made yet.

Despite the serious nature of the incident, Milnerton High School has continued with normal academic activities, with Van Tonder reaffirming the school’s commitment to supporting the victim and ensuring a thorough investigation.

The event has reignited national debate over bullying in South African schools, with calls for stronger enforcement of anti-bullying policies, better safety protocols, and more effective collaboration between schools, parents, and authorities.
