SAN FRANCISCO / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The U.S. government plans to make a significant investment in chip laser technology to spur the development of faster computer chips. The startup xLight is set to receive up to $150 million to develop free electron lasers, which are considered a key technology for the next generation of semiconductors. This initiative marks a turning point in U.S. semiconductor research, previously dominated by foreign companies.

The US government has announced that it will invest up to $150 million in the startup xLight, which specializes in the development of free electron lasers. This technology is seen as crucial to producing faster computer chips. The investment is made by the US Department of Commerce, which has signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding to incentivize the development of this technology.

This initiative is the CHIPS Research and Development Office’s first investment under the Trump administration, after it acquired a $7.4 billion semiconductor research institute originally established under the Biden administration. In the world of advanced chip manufacturing, extreme ultraviolet lithography is central, and currently the Dutch company ASML is the only manufacturer of such machines.

Within these lithography machines, making the laser is the most difficult part. xLight plans to use technology from particle accelerators to develop a laser that uses significantly less power than current models. The company is working closely with US National Labs to develop a prototype that is compatible with machines from ASML or other manufacturers.

US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick emphasized that the US wants to regain leadership in advanced lithography under President Trump. This investment could be an important step towards greater independence from foreign technologies. xLight has also tapped former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger as executive chairman, giving the company additional expertise and credibility.
